We all make mistakes and I am no exception. It was recently called to my attention that I made a faux pas in my latest book The Terror Conspiracy. On Page 103, I wrote about a meeting in the United States between government agents and Osama bin Laden in 1986. One of the attendees of this meeting was former FBI Senior Special Agent Ted L. Gunderson. I quoted from his account of this meeting in the book. There have been several attempts to discredit Gunderson, both for his revelations of the bin Laden meeting as well as other important government controversies, especially one involving reported child abuse. In the interest of journalistic objectivity and balance, I had intended to state that "Gunderson's credibility has been questioned." Instead, it came out "Gunderson's credibility is questionable." The former is a statement of fact, the latter a statement of judgment which was unintended. I missed this in copy reading the manuscript and the copy editor had no reason to think the statement was not what was intended. I have already apologized to Mr. Gunderson for this misstatement and would like to add that at this time I have no reason to doubt his credibility. If I had doubts as to his statements regarding the bin Laden (Tim Osman) meeting, I would not have included them in my book. Jim Marrs |
